Nottingham's NHS Trust in Crisis: Patients Face Unbearable Delays and Overwhelmed Hospitals
The Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is grappling with a dire situation, prompting a critical incident declaration. This decision comes as patients endure agonizing delays and hospitals struggle to cope with a surge in winter illnesses and staff shortages. The trust, responsible for the city's two primary hospitals, is witnessing an unprecedented crisis.
Since Christmas, the trust has been under immense strain, with the emergency department (ED) at Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) bearing the brunt. Designed to handle 350 patients daily, the ED is now inundated with over 500 patients, a staggering increase. This has resulted in patients facing unconscionable waits, often in corridors, as hospital beds are scarce.
But here's where it gets controversial: despite the trust's pleas for people to use the ED only for emergencies, the situation remains dire. The trust's chief operating officer, Andrew Hall, expressed deep regret for the subpar patient experience, emphasizing the need for public understanding and kindness towards staff.
To alleviate the crisis, the trust is taking several steps. Elective procedures will be rescheduled to prioritize the most critically ill patients, and all available beds and spaces will be utilized. Staff redeployment and collaboration with NHS and local partners will expedite discharges and provide much-needed community support.
Dr. Manjeet Shehmar, medical director, urges the public to use the ED responsibly, emphasizing that non-emergency cases will face lengthy waits and may be referred elsewhere. Patients with planned appointments are advised to attend unless informed otherwise.
The East Midlands Ambulance Service also warns of an extremely busy emergency service, urging the public to reserve 999 calls for life-threatening situations.
